Hargeysa, also Harghessa, town, northern Somalia, capital of Hargeysa Province, in the Galgodon (Ogo) Highlands. The town is located in a stock-raising area, and trade in wool, hides, and skins is conducted here. A summer capital of the former British Somaliland, Hargeysa was the official capital from 1941 to 1960, when the protectorate merged with Italian Somalia to form the republic.
