Saint-Louis, city, northwestern Senegal, western Africa, on Saint-Louis Island, at the mouth of the Sénégal River. It is a seaport and the commercial and transportation center for the agricultural Sénégal River valley. St-Louis was established in 1659 by the French as a fortified trading post and is one of the oldest European-founded settlements in West Africa. From 1885 to 1902 the city served as the capital of French West Africa, and from 1902 until 1958 it was the capital of both Senegal and Mauritania.
