Rufisque, city, western Senegal, in Dakar Region, on the Atlantic Ocean at the base of the Cap Vert Peninsula near Dakar. A road junction on the Dakar-Niger Railroad, it was formerly an important port but is now eclipsed by Dakar. It is a peanut-processing center; other industries include titanium extracting, fruit canning, textile milling, oil refining, tanning, fishing, and the manufacture of drugs and shoes. The city was taken by the French in the 1670s and held by the British between 1792 and 1815.
