Kaolack, city, western Senegal, in Kaolack Region, on the Saloum River. An important river port, it is one of the nation's largest communities and a trade and processing center for locally produced peanuts and salt. A railroad links the city with Dakar and landlocked Mali. A large mosque of the Sufi Tijaniyah (Tijaniyya) order of Islam is on the city's outskirts.
