Shomolu, city in southwestern Nigeria, located in Lagos state, 10 km (6 mi) north of the city of Lagos. Shomolu's economy is tied to Lagos. Before the 1950s, Shomolu had few buildings. During the 1960s the urban growth of Lagos spread to Shomolu, which became a poorer residential area. More recently, Shomolu has improved transportation and access to Lagos, which has helped improve living conditions in Shomolu. The city lies in the Yoruba cultural region. Population (1995) 144,100.
