Ondo, city in southwestern Nigeria, located in Ondo state, in the tropical lowlands of the country. Agricultural products of the city include cocoa, palm oil, rubber, cotton, and cassava. Sawmilling is the city's main industry. Factories have recently been established for the manufacture of furniture and other wood products. Ondo has a teacher training college and is a short distance from the Oshosha Game Reserve. The city is part of the Yoruba cultural region. Ondo was on a major trade route in the 1800s and was previously a capital of an ancient Yoruba kingdom. The city came under British control in 1893. Ondo retains traces of the ancient mud walls that once surrounded the city, as was common among Yoruba towns. Population (1995) 165,400.
