Kumo, city in northeastern Nigeria, located in Gombe State. The city is a trading center for guinea corn and cotton raised in the surrounding area. The dry savanna lands of northern Nigeria are ideal for cattle raising, which is also an important component of the Kumo economy. Kumo lies in the Fulani cultural region. The city is connected by road to Gombe, to the north. With construction of the Bornu railroad in the 1950s, Kumo became integrated into the transportation and economic system of the country. Previously it had been largely secluded from outside influences because of its location in an underpopulated and largely inaccessible region of Nigeria. Population (1995) 144,400.
