Ikorodu, town in southwestern Nigeria, in Lagos state. Located near the Lagos Lagoon on the Bight of Benin, Ikorodu has a significant fishing industry. Agricultural products from the surrounding region, such as cassava, maize (corn), okra, cabbages, bananas, and pineapples, are collected at Ikorodu and distributed to the metropolitan area of Lagos. Because of the abundance of sedge grass in the marshy coastal lowlands, Ikorodu is a major center of mat weaving. The city is also a center for pottery and for silver and gold work. Ikorodu is connected to Lagos, Sagamu, and Epe by modern highways. Founded by members of the Awori subgroup of the Yoruba, Ikorodu became an important trading post in the mid-19th century. Population (1995) 180,300.Microsoft® Encarta® Online Encyclopedia 2001 http://encarta.msn.com © 1997-2001 Microsoft Corporation. All rights reserved. Ikorodu Information info
