Fianarantsoa, town in southeastern Madagascar, capital of Fianarantsoa Province. A commercial center and road hub, the town is the highland terminus of a railroad to the port of Manakara on the eastern coast. Tobacco, rice, and coffee are grown in the surrounding area, which also contains livestock farms and vineyards. Local industries include rice processing, beef canning, brickmaking, and woodworking. The town is the site of the Mahazengy Teachers College and Tambohobé Women's College.
