Nairobi Restaurants - Pictures

Café Latino
Village Market, Limuru Road - 254.2.522661 moderate
One of the newer additions to the Nairobi restaurant scene, Cafe Latino serves some of the city's finest Italian fare. Located at Village Market, Cafe Latino specializes in seafood dishes, pastas and other delights. On Saturday evenings Cafe Latino is transformed into Nairobi's only Latin music and dance club.

The Carnivore
Langata Road - 254.2.501775 moderate
If you had not guessed already this is not a restaurant for vegetarians, although it does serve one or two vegetarian dishes. Situated about 15 minutes from town the Carnivore is a sprawling, open-air affair modelled on Brazilian roast meat restaurants. The meat is cooked on large open charcoal pits. It serves every kind of meat that you can think of: venison, beef, pork, lamb, zebra, giraffe, ostrich, impala and goat. The spare ribs and fish (which must be ordered beforehand) are first class and you may eat as much as you want and more. The choice of four cocktails are worth their weight in vodka and the list of desserts is unusually long for Nairobi. Children may be seen and heard in the playground which is provided outside.
Cuisine: African
Recommended Dishes: Hartebeast, zebra
Review: Worth the long wait
Service was slow, as it was very crowded, but definitely worth the wait. Food is excellent - try the game meat. Hartebeast, zebra, crocodile, ostrich, impala were all excellent, as was the less exotic chicken, beef and pork.
African Heritage
Banda Street - 254.2.337507 expensive
As well as producing pan-African cooking during the day, this restaurant specializes in Ethiopian food at night. There is usually a choice of 7 or so different spicy stews to choose from, most of which are very tasty indeed. An Ethiopian buffet is served in the dining room of this well-known craft shop, located close to center town. Certainly one of the favorites with tourists, and with reason for the food is good and expensive (drinks are really the expensive part). Outside the main restaurant is a steak/kebab grill where a lamb kebab should set you up for the day. With its recent redecoration the African Heritage has style

Alan Bobbe's Bistro
Cianda House, Koinange Street - 254.2.336952 moderate
The small, hidden entrance a few yards from the busy Koinange Street does not prevent the Bistro from being extremely popular, so it is necessary to book in advance. The civilized atmosphere, quiet classical music, cozy tables, red walls and calm waiters combine with excellent cooking to make this restaurant one of the best in Nairobi. Downstairs at lunchtime there is a special and inexpensive menu; the soups are generally outstanding as are the salads.
Cuisine: French
Malindi Dishes
Gaberone Road - 254.2.333191 very cheap
Excellent Swahili and ethiopian cuisine, with tasty dishes made with chicken, fish and vegetables, accompanied by "maziwalata" (a special drink made with milk). Clean and economic, it's one of the most ancient self-service restaurant in Nairobi.
Cuisine: African
Marino's
International Life H.se, Mama Ngina St. - 254.2.557404 inexpensive
Some people go to Marino's just for the mouth-watering ice cream. But there is a broad selection of other good desserts if you can fit them in after the calamaretti or tournedos in red wine. This is popular during the day as well as in the evening, and many of the customers have been regulars for years. The numerous waiters are experienced and welcoming.

Red Bull
Transnational Plaza, Mama Ngina Street - 254.2.228045 moderate
The most astonishing thing about the Red Bull is its very unassuming entrance. But once on the first floor and through the constantly open doors you know that everything is going to be all right. This is the place for those with insatiable appetites. The desserts are only just smaller than the main courses but quite as spectacular and well presented.
Cuisine: French
Stavrose
Post Bank Hse, Banda Street - 254.2.728157 inexpensive
There seems to be a million waiters inside the Stavrose, and maybe it is essential judging by the number of hungry guests at lunchtime. Locally it is very popular so I advise going early or booking to ensure a table. The chicken tikka is of a high quality, which says something in a city that produces hundreds of kilos a day of chicken tikka. Businesses often use the Stavrose for its efficient take-away service, and travellers are often seen in the nearby Jeevanjee Gardens eating Stavrose food. It is possible to get wine here but not beer to accompany your meal
Cuisine: Indian / Pakistani
