Cape Coast, city, southern Ghana, capital of the Central Region, a port on the Gulf of Guinea. Products of the district that are exported from the city include frozen fish, cacao, coconuts, citrus fruits, corn, and cassava. It is the site of a university college. The area was settled by the Portuguese in 1610, and the city, formerly called Cape Coast Castle, is the site of an old castle and several forts. The Swedes in 1652 built the fort of Carolusberg, which passed to the Dutch in 1659 and to the British in 1667. Cape Coast was the capital of the British Gold Coast possessions until the 1870s, when the capital was transferred to Accra. The city was chartered in 1905.
