Asamankese, city in southeastern Ghana, in the Eastern Region. Yams, cassava, maize, and plantains are the principal food crops of the area. Commercial crops include cocoa, citrus fruits, kola nuts, and coffee. Forest industries are also significant; mahogany, makore, scented guarea, and African walnut are among the valuable trees. Industrial diamonds and bauxite are found in the Asamankese area. Asamankese is on a major road linking Accra and Kumasi. During the late 16th century, Asamankese served as the capital of Otumfo Asare, ruler of the Akan state of Akwamu.
