Dire Dawa, city in eastern Ethiopia, on the Dachatu River. Located midway between Addis Ababa and the port of Djibouti at the Red Sea, Dire Dawa is important commercially. The city has plants producing cement, textiles, and processed food. Population (1994) 164,851.
