Dese, town in central Ethiopia, capital of Welo Region, on an escarpment above the Great Rift Valley. The town is an important market center, with trading in durra (sorghum), livestock, coffee, hides, leopard skins, honey, beeswax, and civet. Local industries include silverworking, weaving, and tanning. Peat deposits are nearby. The monastery of St. Stephen is to the north on an island in Lake Haik. Dese was the capital of a powerful 18th-century Oromo kingdom. The name is also spelled Dessie, Dase, or Dessye.
