Shibin al Kawm, city in northeastern Egypt, capital of the governorate of Minofiya. The city is located 59 km (37 mi) north of Cairo, slightly east of the Rosetta branch of the Nile River. Shibin al Kawm serves as an important agricultural and administrative center in the delta region of Egypt. Cotton, flax, and cereals grown in the surrounding area are sold in the city, and Shibin al Kawm itself has traditionally supported some light industry, such as the weaving of cloth. It is connected to Cairo and Alexandria by a rail line and to other parts of the surrounding delta region by canals.
