Hulwan, also Helwan, residential area, northern Egypt, in Cairo Governorate, near the Nile. Since 1958 iron and steel have been produced in a modern industrial area. Hulwan is a resort, with medicinal springs, hotels, and a golf course. It is the site of Hulwan University (1975), an observatory, and a meteorological station.
