Mbuji-Mayi, formerly Bakwanga, town in south central Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC, formerly Zaire), capital of Kasai-Oriental Region, on the Bushimaie River. It is one of the nation's largest urban areas and the commercial center for a region in which most of the world's industrial diamonds are produced. The community was developed by Europeans as a diamond-mining center of the Belgian Congo after 1910. Called Bakwanga until 1966, it was from 1960 until then the capital of Kasai Sud (South Kasai) Province.
