Bukavu, city in eastern Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC, formerly Zaire), capital of Sud-Kivu Region, on the southwestern shore of Lake Kivu. A trade and communications center for an area producing coffee, citrus fruits, and vegetables, the city has industries producing pharmaceuticals and insecticides, breweries, and food-processing and printing plants. The city is the site of two junior colleges and serves as a base for tourists to the lake districts and nearby national parks. Called Costermanville under Belgian rule, Bukavu succeeded Rutshuru as province capital in the 1920s and became a center of European settlement before independence in 1960.
