Praia, city and capital of Cape Verde, on the southeastern shore of the island of São Tiago, off the coast of western Africa. Praia is a seaport and trading hub for the agricultural products from the islands and is the administrative center of the country. The city also has a tourist industry. Praia, made the capital of the Portuguese-controlled Cape Verde Islands in 1770, remained the capital when the country became independent in 1975.
