Mostaganem, city, northern Algeria, capital of Mostaganem Province, on the Mediterranean Sea, near Oran. The city exports cereals, vegetables, and wines produced in the surrounding region. In Mostaganem are distilleries and plants producing cement, cordage, electric equipment, flour products, furniture, and tobacco products. Mostaganem was founded in the 11th century. After a prosperous period in the 16th century the city declined in importance while under Turkish rule. Population (1987) 114,037.
